I have officially been living in Athens, GA for over a year now and I figured it was time I finally created a food guide. I absolutely love food! And finding new places to eat is a favorite weekend activity for my husband and I. Luckily, Athens has no shortage of adorable and delicious restaurants to satisfy a foodie’s wants and needs. Honestly, every place is so cute, with its own unique charm.
So here it is, a compilation of my favorite go-to spots in Athens:
1. Mama’s Boy
This is hands-down my favorite place in Athens! Anytime I have family or friends in town, Mama’s Boy is the first place we go. I am constantly dreaming about their buttery biscuits! These biscuits paired with the raspberry jam will leave your tastebuds longing for more. For real though, I am constantly craving their biscuits. My go-to dish is the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Scrambler (pictured above).
However, the biscuits are not the only thing that I constantly desire. Their banana bread and cinnamon rolls (which are the size of your face) are incredible! Pro tip: my husband and I usually order our main entrees separately then share an appetizer of either the banana bread or cinnamon roll…best of both worlds right?
2. Big City Bread
If you are in the mood for a late breakfast or early lunch, Big City Bread is the place to go. Serving a wide variety of house-made breads, pastries, and cakes, you cannot go wrong. Bread is one of my favorite food groups, so this place is paradise for me.
When I find myself at Big City Bread, I opt for the pick 2 choice and get half the tomato, basil, and mozzarella sandwich with a cup of their tomato soup. It is the perfect mid-day meal to keep ya going.
3. Cali N Tito’s
I cannot rave about Cali N Tito’s enough! Delicious Cuban food, a laid back environment, and a backdrop of Latin music playing in your ears is what you will find when you come here. Do not expect fine dining; rather, picture yourself sitting at a colorful picnic table, sitting next to an old row-boat turned water feature, eating salty chips and queso. Sounds like a perfect Friday night to me!
My favorite item on the menu is the El Sandwich Cubano. It is quite large so my husband and I usually go halfsies. Pair that with some chips and queso and you are set for a great evening.
4. The Place
Just thinking about The Place makes my mouth water. If you are looking for some good, modernized southern cooking this is literally “the place.” I can’t even put into words how incredible their food is. Therefore, I will just tell you what I recommend: The Famous Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich (pictured above). Because when you are in the south, it is only right to get yourself some fried chicken.
My husband recommends their Chicken and Waffle. Served with candied bacon and a salted caramel and blueberry reduction, I would agree it is 100% worth a try.
5. The Grit
If you are vegetarian or just in the mood for something a little more plant-based, then The Grit is the place for you. I highly recommend their famous grilled cheese sandwich…it literally just melts in your mouth. And the home-made bread it is served on is perfection. As a side, order their sweet potato fries (these are a true weakness of mine).
If you aren’t in the mood for a sandwich, The Grit also has rotating power bowls that are absolutely scrumptious and healthy…YAY best of both worlds!
6. Last Resort Grill
I will just start by saying that The Last Resort has some of the best red velvet cake EVER! Their cream cheese icing is like none-other! So yeah, um, you need to try it.
Anyway, back to the food. My husband and I reserve this as our special occasion spot or our “let’s wait until our parents come to town and treat us to dinner” spot. My favorite dish of all time is found at this restaurant. That dish is the Last Resort’s Praline (pictured below). Plump chicken, stuffed with a medley of cheeses, topped with a walnut-honey drizzle is the perfect symphony in your mouth. Go get it…now.
7. Donna Chang’s
Donna Chang’s is what I consider a hipster meets asian food restaurant. Here, you order a few dishes to share with the table and enjoy conversation with those around you. This place is the perfect date-night spot, equipped with a romantic ambiance.
My dish recommendations are: CRAB RANGOONS (I will have random cravings for these all the time!!), Bouncy Peanut Noodles, General Tso’s Chicken, and the Very Tasty Tofu.
My husband and I probably come here more than we care to admit. Grindhouse is our ultimate comfort food spot. What can I say, we are both burger lovers and their burgers are sinfully good. Plus the atmosphere is chill and perfect for a laid-back evening. I usually get the junior Grindhouse Style burger with a side of sweet potato fries. It is yummy 🙂
9. Mellow Mushroom
I just recently found this place and my pizza game has forever been changed. Mellow Mushroom has the best crust I have ever had! I am pretty sure they cover it in butter and garlic or something. I am lame and usually opt for the classic cheese pizza…but hey, you can’t break what ain’t broke. However,if I am feeling a bit more adventurous, I like to take a ride on the wild side with pesto pizza.
I will just end by saying there is a reason they were voted Best Pizza in Athens.
Clocked has insanely juicy and delicious burgers all housed within the walls of a funky, diner establishment. With that said, I would recommend not wearing a white top, as you may find yourself leaving with some burger juice for later. Go hungry and go ready to get messy.
11. The Farm Cart: Athens Farmer’s Market
The Farm Cart is a not-so-hidden gem located at the Athens Farmer’s Market. You can easily spot this little cart by following the line of people waiting in line to receive one of their delicious breakfast biscuits. If you find yourself one Saturday morning at the Athens Farmer’s Market, be sure to bring an appetite. These sandwiches are delicious and filling.
Well there you have it. My ultimate food guide to Athens, Ga. These are the places that I want to go to time and time again.
