Forget moving to a big city! Athens, Georgia is the place to be. Whether you are looking for family-friendly entertainment, delicious restaurants, or a lively music scene, Athens has something for everyone.
Athens is a small college town, home to the University of Georgia, where the colors of red and black hang proudly on every street and a love of Bulldog football runs deep within the veins of all those who walk the town. A quaint downtown area is lined with cute shops and fantastic eateries, all equipped to meet your unique needs and taste buds.
So get ready to pack up the moving truck and set your GPS for Athens, GA because I have compiled a list of 5 highly persuasive reasons why this is the place to be.
This is one of the most unique events I have ever been to and that is why it tops my list. Twilight is a 40-year tradition and one of Athens’ most beloved community events. This two-day event takes place each April, on a Friday and Saturday, and offers a schedule jam-packed with biking and running competitions, as well as music, BMX, food, and much more. The main event takes place on Saturday night, with the women’s bike race at 7:00pm, followed by the men’s race at 8:30pm. As a participant, prepare yourself for tight turns and tight quarters. As a bystander, relish in the environment and feel the wind smack your face as a blur of bikers’ wiz by.
If you are a runner, you can register for a spot in the SPARC Athens Twilight 5K Run. Or if you prefer biking and aren’t afraid of competition, register for the Twilight Race, put on by Athens Orthopedic Clinic. Check out the Athens Twilight website for more information!
AthFest is a 3-day festival each June that brings together the best regional and local musicians and visual artists in downtown Athens, Ga. The mission of this festival is to bring awareness to a local nonprofit, called AthFest Educates, which provides funding to support music and arts education for youth. With multiple stages set-up throughout the downtown area, and multiple concerts happening all times of the day, you are sure to find a sound that pleases your ears and makes your head nod. So all my music and art lovers out there, put on your dancing shoes, bring out your wallet, and head to AthFest. Oh, and don’t forget to bring your appetite. Mixed in amongst the many art vendors you may find some food…delicious, yummy, scrumptious food.
I can’t talk about Athens without mentioning the University of Georgia (UGA) and Bulldog football. It seems as if it is a way of life down here. Bulldog statues sit proudly in front of every home and business. Giant “G” stickers can be seen found on the bumper of each car that passes. Oh, and the whole town shuts down on game day. I even have friends who had to plan their wedding around the Bulldog football schedule. So yeah, it is kind of a big deal, which is why you need to attend a game!
On game day you can find tailgaters as far as the eye can see. Every open patch of grass on UGA’s campus covered by fans dressed head-to-toe in red and black, grilling burgers, playing corn hole, and trash talking the opponent. It is a whole other world. When game-time comes around, there is not an open seat in the stadium. It seems as if every student on campus can be found in attendance and every alumnus has returned, bringing with them their entire family. But be ready to spend some money, tickets do not come cheap, especially the good seats.
I love food. That is a fact. And let me tell you, Athens is “the place” to eat! With a never-ending list of new restaurants and cuisines to try out, you are sure to find something that tickles your fancy. My advice to you, create a restaurant bucket list. Trust me, it will help keep you sane and ensure you visit all the best places. If you are using this article as a starting off point on your food journey, read my ultimate Athens food guide here.
Athens has a very happening music scene. A variety of music venues can be found downtown, including the legendary Georgia Theater. The Georgia Theater was founded in 1978 and since that time, many prominent national and local artists have performed here. Whatever your sound may be, whether it be folk, indie, rock, country, alternative, etc., you can find it emanating from the speakers in this state-of-the-art venue. In the summertime, a rooftop patio is the perfect place to grab a bite and listen to live music, while overlooking the historic downtown.
Other live music venues include: 40 Watt, The Foundry, Hendershots, and the Classic Center. As you can tell, there is no shortage of live music to be found in this charming town of Athens.
